Spokeo Opt-Out: How to Remove Your Profile

Spokeo is the fastest of the big people-search sites to remove yourself from — often gone within hours. It is also the one most likely to hold three or four profiles for you, because it indexes by email address and phone number as well as by name.

The mistake: searching only your name

Most guides tell you to search Spokeo for your name, remove what comes up, and call it done. That leaves profiles live.

Spokeo builds records from several different starting points, and its own search will surface different profiles depending on what you search with. So search all three:

  1. By name — and in every state you have lived in, not just your current one.
  2. By email address — every address you have ever used, including old ones and work ones.
  3. By phone number — current and previous, mobile and landline.
The email search is the highest-yield move

Searching a broker by email address rather than name is the single most productive habit in this whole process. It surfaces profiles filed under a name variant you would never have thought to try — a misspelling, a maiden name, a middle initial. Spokeo, BeenVerified, ThatsThem and Radaris all support it.

Open every result that is you and copy the URL out of the address bar. Collect them all before you submit anything — the opt-out form handles one profile at a time and will not find the others for you.

The opt-out process

  1. Go to spokeo.com/optout.
  2. Paste the first profile URL.
  3. Enter your throwaway opt-out email address — not your real one.
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA and submit.
  5. Open the confirmation email and click the link. This is not optional.
  6. Repeat for every profile URL you collected.

Removal is often live within a few hours, and Spokeo generally honours it within 72 hours at the outside.

The step where most requests quietly die

Step 5. The confirmation email.

Submitting the form does nothing on its own. Spokeo sends a verification link, and the request only enters the queue when you click it. People submit the form, see a success message, close the tab, and never open the email — then conclude months later that Spokeo ignored them.

Two things that break this
  • The link can expire. Do not submit ten requests on Monday and check the inbox on Friday. Submit a batch of five or six, then go and clear the inbox immediately.
  • It lands in spam. A verification email from a data broker to a brand-new throwaway address is exactly what spam filters are built to catch. Check that folder before assuming it never arrived.

If the CAPTCHA loops forever

A recurring complaint: you solve the CAPTCHA, the page reloads, and it asks again.

This is almost always a tracker-blocking extension interfering with the CAPTCHA script. Fix it by:

  • Disabling your ad blocker or privacy extension for that tab only, then re-submitting
  • Or using a different browser — a clean profile with no extensions works reliably

It is worth noting the irony that privacy tooling breaks privacy opt-out forms. It is not always an accident, and it is a good argument for keeping one plain browser profile purely for this work.

Verifying it worked

  1. Wait 72 hours.
  2. Open a private window — Spokeo caches, and a logged-in or cached view can mislead you in either direction.
  3. Search again by name, then by email, then by phone.
  4. Search Google for site:spokeo.com "Your Name" to catch anything the on-site search hides.
  5. Log the date.

If a profile is still live after two weeks, re-file using the same email address, then email their privacy team citing your state privacy law and asking for written confirmation of deletion.

Two down, about sixty-nine to go.

Does removing yourself from Spokeo remove you from Google?

Not immediately. Google keeps a cached copy of the page and will keep showing the old result until it re-crawls — which can take weeks.

Once the Spokeo page is actually gone, you can force it: Google’s Remove Outdated Content tool accepts requests from anyone, not just site owners, and clears dead results in a day or two. There is also Google’s Results about you tool, which monitors for pages exposing your contact details and lets you request removal in a couple of taps.

The order matters: kill the source page first, then clear the search result. Doing it the other way round just means the result comes back at the next crawl.
